ONE CHILD BORN: THE MUSIC OF LAURA NYRO
A one-woman show featuring Kate Ferber

ONE CHILD BORN is a one-woman cabaret celebrating the songs of Laura Nyro. Written by Louis Greenstein and Kate Ferber, and directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt, this new cabaret celebrates the music and creative force of the late singer-songwriter whose pop masterpieces - including “Eli's Comin',” “And When I Die,” and “Save the Country”– topped the charts in the '60s and '70s. Kate Ferber, an exciting new talent on New York's music and theater scenes, plays nine characters, each of whose lives were touched by Nyro's music. In ONE CHILD BORN, Ferber takes the audience on a journey of passion, whimsy, humor, and classic songs that will inspire long-time fans as well as a generation of music lovers who are new to Nyro’s catalogue.

Cited as a source of inspiration by no less than Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Jenny Lewis, and Rickie Lee Jones, singer-songwriter Laura Nyro (1947-1997) had more simultaneous Top 10 hits than any other songwriter until the Beatles. The first woman ever to sit at the piano and perform her own pop songs, she has been covered by artists including the Fifth Dimension, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Three Dog Night, Peter, Paul & Mary, Barbra Streisand, and Liza Minnelli – and was recently sampled by Kanye West. Bursting onto the music scene as a Bronx teenager, Nyro bridged doo-wop, Tin Pan Alley, and jazz to create her own sound, hailed by heavyweights as diverse as Miles Davis, Stephen Sondheim, and Jackson Browne. Nyro’s music captures her love of New York City, her response to war and poverty in the turbulent 1960s, her unbridled poetic expression, signature chord progressions, and soaring vocals.

ONE CHILD BORN was developed through a residency at New York City's CAP21. Its New York Premiere sold out the Laurie Beechman Theater in July 2009. In January 2010, ONE CHILD BORN sold out Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater.

Reviews for One Child Born

"One Child Born, which runs a little over an hour, was conceived by Greenstein after he saw Ferber perform in a local theater production. After a year-long developmental process at NYU’s musical theater conservatory, CAP21, a well-crafted theater piece emerged. One Child Born had it’s New York City debut at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in July of 2009. It has since enjoyed a a sold-out run at Joe’s Pub in New York, and two sold-out performances in Philadelphia. The show returns to New York City, and Joe’s Pub, for one performance on August 11. If you are going to be anywhere in the metropolitan area that night, you are unlikely to find a more entertaining evening. If past demand is any indication, I would advise you to get your tickets now, as the show always seems to sell out quickly."
